Things To Consider When Adopting Internationally

When adopting a child from a country that is not your own, we call that either foreign adoption or international adoption. It is shown that more children are being adopted through international channels than domestic ones. It is true that there are more foreign children that need to be adopted. Plus the waiting time might be less than domestic adoptions. But, you need to remember if you decided to adopt internationally there are many thing to take in consideration.

The first thing to think about is cultural issues. It is important that you take that in consideration. If the child is a little older and comes from a poor country, he or she might have a culture shock. Also you have to think about the language that this new child has been speaking, most likely he or she will be speaking the language of their country. Then you might encounter cultural issues like customs and eating habits, the child will be used to his or her homeland culture. This can be very puzzling for a child, adoptive parents need to be sensitive when it comes time to bring the child home, doing a little research on their country and culture could help make the transition easier.

Second thing is heritage; it will be quite different then yours. What we include in heritage is ethnic origin, genetic background and physical feature; the child will be from a different race than his or her adoptive parents. This might not be an issue for you but you will need to take your family and surroundings into consideration. You might want to think about going to school, interacting with other children of his or her age; he will be quite different from them. You need to prepare for that, if the child is young at first he won’t know but then he will start wondering and you need to be ready to answer those questions, so he or she will not feel outcast.

Last but not least, you will need to think finances. Adoption can be a very expensive process. Especially if you are adopting a foreign child, those costs can be much higher. For most countries, not only one of the adoptive parents, but both, need to travel to the country to get the child. Those travels can become quite expensive especially if the adoption list is long. Plus you have certain countries that require that the adoptive families stay for a certain amount of days in the country before the adoption can start. Most foreign children that are waiting to be adopted live in an orphanage that is run by their country and relies on donations from adoptive parent to survive. Some countries ask for high donations, at the end you are looking at expenses that can range between $15,000 and $30,000.

It is important that you understand that the role of an adoptive parent is to address all those elements. You need to remember that the child from a foreign country will have to make a lot of adjustments all at once. We suggest that before going through the adoption process, you consider seeking help from a counselor. They can assist you in finding tips and guidelines to follow to help the process to be a happy, loving and easier one.
